Teaching, nourished by careful preparation and sustained by love, is my vocation.  I believe a good teacher cultivates talent as well as intellect, understanding as well as knowledge. I advocate appreciation of literature for its essential beauty and richness; great literature also explores the fundamental questions of human existence. I also challenge my students to examine their own lives through the literature we read. My students consistently remark on my great passion, which I hope is contagious and a source of motivation. I maintain a rigorous but nurturing environment for learning. No PC students would tell you that “Dr. S.” is an easy professor; however, I doubt they would tell you that I don’t care or am unenthusiastic either!

I joined the faculty at PC in 1996. I originally hail from Pittsburgh and remain a loyal Steelers fan.  I relish seventies rock, all things Disney, traveling, and especially friends and family. My husband is Greg Goeckel, Professor of Mathematics, and we are the doting and proud parents of our son, Zachary.  My step daughter, Julia Goeckel, is currently a student here, and my stepson, Philip Goeckel, attends Piedmont Tech, where he studies computing. Our family is completed by our two furballs, cats Sebastian and Viola, named after the twins in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
