English Major and Minor

The English Major

The English major at PC requires 33 credit hours (11 courses) above the ENGL 110-111 level:

  • ENGL 420 Senior Capstone in English

One course selected from our Foundation menu:

  • ENGL 208 Introduction to Literary Theory and Criticism
  • ENGL 213 Research Methods
  • ENGL 219 Studies in Linguistics

Three Survey courses selected from the following:

  • ENGL 201 Survey of English Literature I
  • ENGL 202 Survey of English Literature II
  • ENGL 203 Survey of World Literature I
  • ENGL 204 Survey of World Literature II
  • ENGL 206 Survey of American Literature I
  • ENGL 207 Survey of American Literature II
  • ENGL 209 African American Literature
  • ENGL 210 Introduction to World Cinema

One literature course from the Medieval or Renaissance Period:

  • ENGL 317 Chaucer
  • ENGL 318 Topics in Medieval Literature
  • ENGL 325 Renaissance Poetry & Drama
  • ENGL 350 Shakespeare

One literature course from the 18th or 19th Century:

  • ENGL 305 18th Century Poetry & Prose
  • ENGL 206 Poetry & Prose of the Romantic Period
  • ENGL 329 The Victorian Age
  • ENGL 336 American Renaissance
  • ENGL 361 The English Novel to 1900

One literature course from the pre-1900 offerings (designated in the catalog).

One literature course from the post-1900 offerings as designated in the catalog.

Two additional courses from CRWR, ENGL, or MDST 230.

Students seeking Honors in English will take ENGL 398 Honors Research instead of ENGL 420, as well as an additional Foundation course and ENGL elective course.

The English Minor

The minor in English requires 18 credit hours (6 courses), including the following:
