A Closer Look: English at PC

Small classes provide an ideal setting to discuss literature and writing with your fellow classmates and professors. Many times, professors are happy to continue the discussion after class. In addition, the English Department offers several other programs to make your education well-rounded and comprehensive.

Internships

Each PC student is required to complete an internship or intercultural experience before graduation. But rather than merely being something you must do, internships allow you to build a resume while you're still in college. Plus, you have the option of interning during the semester or summer.

Study Abroad

Generally a close-knit bunch, English majors often travel as a group overseas to fulfill their intercultural experience requirement. Professors accompany students on these Maymester trips to Europe and Asia. English majors have taken recent trips to China in 2006 and England and Scotland in 2007. The next scheduled trips include one to Ireland and one to Prague and Berlin in the spring of 2009.

English majors can also choose to study abroad through other exchange programs which exist between PC and universities in England, Scotland, Germany, and Australia, among others.

Publications

While all students are encouraged to contribute to the college publications, many English majors and minors naturally choose to participate in the creation of the Blue Stocking, PaC SaC, or Figs and Thistles. And why not? By serving as a staff writer or potentially as an editor, you can gain valuable experience while working on the craft of writing.

Writing Center

As a tutor in the Writing Center, you can help improve a fellow student’s written work by working one-on-one with him or her in 30 minute or hour-long conferences. Most tutors have noted that, in addition to helping others, the experience improves their own habits and abilities as writers. Writing tutors ask questions as readers, make suggestions, and help students learn to revise and edit.

International English Honor Society

PC is the Alpha Alpha Tau chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. Students must meet the following eligibility requirements: must complete at least two courses beyond English 111, achieve a 3.0 GPA in all English courses, place in the top 35% of your class, and complete a minimum of three semesters of college courses.

You can enjoy many perks of membership in Sigma Tau Delta, including the opportunities for scholarships, awards, publication, presenting, and internships.
