Lacy Feigh, 12

Award:
Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad in Egypt
, Fall 2010

The Gilman Scholarship is available to Pell Grant recipients interested in studying abroad.  While Gilman  Scholars travel all over the world, the program encourages students to travel outside of normal study abroad countries (ie. Western Europe and Australia).  When students end their program, the program’s creators hope students will leave their host countries with a better understanding of other cultures and increase cultural understanding within their own communities.  Each student must complete a project upon arrival back in the United States to show their communities their experiences abroad.

Lacy’s Reflections:
‘Fall of 2010 I will be attending the American University in Cairo, Egypt.  At AUC I will enroll in a class with the Arabic Institute as well as classes in Modern Islamic History, Egyptian History, and the Government of Egypt.  I was encouraged to travel to Egypt and study the region more extensively after taking Middle Eastern History last semester, which introduced me to the eye opening history of Middle Eastern culture.  Before I head to Cairo, I am also traveling to Switzerland where I will explore the wonderful world of mountains, castles, and ornately decorated churches for a week.’
