History
The PC History Department delights in introducing students to as full an experience in history as a student's schedule and desires warrant. With a highly-trained faculty known for excellence in teaching and research and for student-friendly interaction, the department seeks to develop within students a love of learning, the essential skills of rational thought and effective communication, and an empathy for others with whom they come into contact.
Versatility and variety are key words in the History Department. A array of courses make up the offerings of the department, ranging from more traditional topics such as U.S. History or Medieval Europe to cutting edge topics like Environmental History or Terror and Violence. Additionally, the department encourages student travel by offering various means by which students can engage the larger world. Regularly leading students abroad, the department hosts trips that last from 1 week over Spring Break to 3 weeks during the summer months. Honors projects and independent research allow students to pursue a topic of their choice under the supervision of one of the department faculty, and internships allow for students to explore career options.
The history department faculty realizes that academic achievement should not go unrewarded. The department offers membership in Phi Alpha Theta, a national honor society that recognizes excellence in the study of history. PC's chapter holds annual banquets, sponsors guest speakers, and encourages students to present original research papers at statewide conferences.
History students have entered a wide variety of professions, ranging from teaching to medicine, from the military to industry. Many of these alumni have reported back to the department that the training and experiences that they received while a PC history major has proven of great value in the careers and lives.
