John B. "Jake" Penland was born in Columbia and graduated from Presbyterian College in 1938.  He began to work with The State in Columbia in 1938, but took time off for service in World War II.  After the war, he returned to The State, where he worked as a sports writer, sports editor, and features writer.  He was named South Carolina Sports Writer of the Year three times.  He died in 1989.
