NEW MUSIC STUDENTS 2014

WELCOME TO THE PC DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC

ARE YOU STARTING CLASSES IN AUGUST 2014?

CHOIR, BELLS, AND PEP BAND CAMPS

  • Friday, August 15th – Upperclassmen move into dorms
  • Saturday, August 16th – Freshmen pick up key cards and move into dorms – 8:30am – 1:00pm
  • The processing of your “early arrival” is handled by the Department of Music – DO NOT call Residence Life and ask them about your early arrival – the music professors clear your early arrival for you with that office – when you arrive on campus on that Saturday, you’ll be greeted by choir/band/bell upperclassmen who will be there to assist you with finding the room, getting access, and beginning the moving in process.
  • Early arrival students will be in rehearsals off and on throughout the three days prior to the beginning of Orientation – once Orientation begins, all rehearsals stop until classes begin
  • Early arrival students will have an advantage in meeting with faculty, working on schedule, etc., before the Orientation begins
  • Parents may decide to return for the first day of Orientation, but their presence is not required – the decision to return or not is entirely up to the family – there will be plenty of activity for the students during that first day, although the majority of the morning and early afternoon will be set aside for other freshmen to move into their dorms

WHAT COURSES DO I TAKE?

  • BASIC INFO
    • In BANNER, look for Course Search, select Subject Area – MUSIC
    • Then look for the ensembles starting at the number 1600 – they are all plainly marked – select and hit REGISTER
    • What courses should a MINOR in music take in the first year at PC?
      • The minor in music includes 1 year of music theory, the music appreciation course (also counts as GenEd), and lessons and ensembles – and must total 22 hours
      • We recommend that ALL MINORS take music theory in their first year at PC – it’s listed as MUSC 1201, 1202 – you register for both (classroom and eartraining/sightsinging)
      • You also register for a private lesson in your area (MUSC 1500) and an ensemble (they start at MUSC 1600 through 1699)
    • What courses should a MAJOR in music take in the first year at PC?
      • The major should take the following:
        • MUSC 1201, 1202 (music theory) – 4 hrs
        • MUSC 1301 (music seminar) – 1 hr
        • MUSC 1000 (recital attendance) – 0 hr
        • Lessons (MUSC 1551 – in the appropriate area) – 1 hr
        • Ensembles (starting at MUSC 1600 – and in the appropriate area) – 1-2 hrs
        • Keyboard skills (MUSC 1701 ) – 1 hr
        • That’s 8-9 hours in music – and you’ll need to take 6-7 hours in GenED
        • Don’t worry about “getting behind” – the program’s designed for everyone to graduate in 4 years – it’s just a little upside-down
    • What if I just want to register for ensembles?
      • In BANNER, drop and add classes, look for Class Search, choose music as the “subject area” and look in the list for classes starting at MUSC 1600 – all the 16XX classes are ensembles
      • Just select the ones that apply to you and hit “register” – if you don’t have a time conflict, you should be immediately added to the class roster
