Over 400 members of the campus community volunteered at 14 separate locations on Friday August, 21, making this year’s Service Day the most successful event of its kind in PC’s history.
New students and HOSE orientation leaders, along with faculty and staff, volunteered at a local Safe Home, fire department, and several churches, homes for the elderly, ministries, and more. The volunteer efforts were part of Service Day, an orientation event which introduces new students to the college motto, “While we live, we serve.”
“This year's Service Day went exceptionally well,” said Caroline Langford, a junior psychology major from Anderson, SC. “It was a great time for students, both old and new, to meet one another, spend time together, and really learn what Dum Vivimus Servimus means.”
Langford and other students volunteered at Christ Central Ministries in Joanna. There, they cleaned and organized rooms, painted, and cut grass at the old elementary school building that had been abandoned since 1999.
“It was an incredible experience to see how happy the people there were to have help as they rarely have any volunteers,” Langford said.
Groups of students also cut grass, picked up litter, scraped and painted street signs, and cleaned curbs and sidewalks in an effort to help refurbish the Lydia Mill area of Clinton.
“We are thrilled to have this many people helping us,” said Doris Straight, member of Bethany Presbyterian Church on Friday. “We have so much work to do we can’t possibly get it all done alone.”
The volunteers helped Open Door Ministries, the United Way, United Ministries, and more.
As a group, the new students had accumulated nearly 30,000 hours of service to others before arriving at PC. During Service Day on Friday, they added nearly 2000 hours to that total.
