Civil rights leader to visit PC
March 20, 2009
The Rev. Dr. Grady Butler, who was once imprisoned with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for their civil rights convictions and work, will visit PC on March 25th. Butler will discuss his experience with King and the civil rights movement during the 1950’s and ‘60’s.
The Greenville, S.C. native grew up in the Sterling community before spending much of his professional life in the Atlanta area. He graduated from Tuskegee Institute and the Chandler School of Theology at Emory, Columbia Seminary. Butler later earned a doctoral degree from Morehouse School of Religion.
He has served as pastor in many churches and as a community organizer and counselor. Butler most recently has served as a Greenville County School Board Trustee. He has also been featured on South Carolina Educational Television's program about the history and legacy of the negro baseball leagues.
Bulter’s visit is a part of the upcoming Civil Rights Tour Maymester, in which students earn three hours of course credit as they learn about the Civil Rights Movement. From May 10 through May 17, students will tour historic sites and cities, including Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Martin Luther King Center, Selma, Memphis, Birmingham, and more.
The Maymester is led by Dr. Booker T. Ingram, Charles A. Dana Professor of Political Science and Dr. Rodney Cohen, Director of Multicultural Student Affairs.
