ROTC Hall of Fame Induction / Commissioning Ceremony

Army's newest leadersPC's 90th ROTC Commissioning ceremony was held in Edmunds Halls on May 8 at 2:00.

Highlander Battalion cadets Christian Hall of Whitmire, SC, and Shelby Whitlow of Hull, Ga., were commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Army.

Hall, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hall, majored in history and will be assigned an engineer in the Army. In addition to being commissioned, Hall received the Wysor Saber during the ceremony. The Wysor Sybor is awarded annually to the top cadet in the Highlander Battalion. Last year, Hall received the Kimberly Hampton Leadership award.

He will attend Basic Officer Leadership Course II at Fort Benning, Ga., and will attend Officer Basic Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

His first duty assignment is Fort Bragg, NC.

Whitlow, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Whitlow, majored in sociology and will be assigned ordinance in the Army. A member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, he will attend Basic Officer Leadership Course II at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and will attend Officer Basic Course at Fort Lee, Virginia.

His first duty assignment is Fort Hood, Texas.

Marianne Magapan, a rising senior majoring in psychology, received the 2009 Kimberly Hampton Leadership award. Named in honor of a former PC student who was killed in action in Iraq in 2004, the award is presented to the junior Highlander Battalion cadet who personifies hard work, courage, leadership, and honor for school and country.

generalBrigadier General E. Eric Porter became the 27th inductee into the Presbyterian College ROTC Hall of Fame. Porter graduated from PC in 1978 with a bachelor of science in business administration. After completing Adjutant General Officer Advanced course, he became the Chief of Personnel Actions/ Affairs Division, Adjutant General, Headquarters of United States Forces during Operation Urgent Fury, Grenada, XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, NC, among other key assignments.

His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Master Parachutist badge, among many more.

"I am very pleased and honored and humbled to be here in person to receive this recognition while still in uniform,” Porter said after speaking of the accomplishments of past Hall of Fame inductees. "And you can see why I am humbled as my name goes along with those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and those who faced battle and demonstrated courage and bravery."

Also during the ceremony, Lieutenant Colonel Walt Pjetraj, professor of military science at PC and the leader of the Highlander Battalion over the last four years, was presented with an award for his service to the college. Lieutenant Colonel Pjetraj will leave PC for Fort Bragg.
