Freshman receives Youth of the Year award

November 3, 2009

Freshman Purvish Cornish recently received the Central City Optimists Club Youth of the Year award. The award recognizes a young person in the Rock Hill area for excellence in scholarship and service.

“I am ecstatic and feel like all of my hard work in high school finally paid off,” Cornish said about receiving the award.

Cornish participated in the International Baccalaureate program, the York County Leadership program, and Palmetto Boys state while at South Pointe High School.

He also served as president of the Drama Club, president of the Spanish Club, and captain of the South Pointe High School Varsity Dance Team. Further, Cornish was a member of the National Thespian Honor Society and has been a member of the CHAMPS program since the sixth grade.

Cornish plans to volunteer with CHAMPS while at PC.

“It will be great to counsel and work with teenagers who are in the position I was in six years ago,” he said.
