Fraternity helps victims of sexual assault

October 7, 2009

Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity recently held a fundraiser to benefit RAINN, the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network. Money from the event was donated to the Greenwood Sexual Trauma Counseling Center, a RAINN member which also serves Laurens County.

“The fundraiser was an amazing success,” said Johnathan Hunsinger, Alpha Sigma Phi’s Alpha Psi Chapter Service Chair. “We in Alpha Sig care very much about charity as we believe helping victims is the right thing to do.”

This year’s fundraiser included a self-defense class provided by public safety. Last year the fraternity renewed its focus on service, becoming actively involved in Habitat for Humanity and raising funds for various local charities.

“We will continue to help this year as we become involved in the Big Brother-Little Brother program as well as a new Boy Scout program that will begin at the Thornwell Home,” Hunsinger said.

Alpha Sigma Phi is also planning fundraisers for Livestrong, its national philanthropy, and for the International Justice Mission, a human rights agency. Further, fraternity members plan to volunteer with Project Life, an annual Student Volunteer Services project that promotes the bone cancer registry, and PC-V, a week-long SVS event which raises awareness of violence against women.
