The Specifics

Physics majors are required to take 27 semester hours of physics beyond the introductory level, plus supporting courses in mathematics and computer science. Students interested in attending graduate school are encouraged to take eight hours of chemistry.

Major in Physics

CHEM 101, 101L, 102, 102L; CSC 241 or 250; MATH 201, 202, 301, 302, 401; PHYS 121L, 122L, 214, 215, 216, 250, and 350; plus 15 hours of physics numbered 300 or above. With advisor's consent, students may count a physics internship (PHYS 444) as a physics elective.

Minor in Physics:

19 hours in physics including PHYS 121L, 122L, 214, 215, 216, and 250; and 3 hours from any 200-, 300-, or 400-level courses (excluding PHYS 203, 205, and 211). In addition, students must take MATH 201, 202, 301, and 302. Refer to general requirements for minors on page 34.

Major in Medical Physics

Medical physics uses physics to help treat and diagnose diseases. The medical physics major lays the groundwork for further education in areas like magnetic resonance imaging, brain imaging, utrasound imaging, and radiation therapy and oncology. Medical physics majors receive broad preparation in physics, chemistry, and biology.

A total of 78-81 hours are required for the major in medical physics:

BIOL 111, 111L, 112, 112L, 311;CHEM 101, 101L, 102, 102L, 221, 221L, 222, 222L; MATH 201, 202, 301, 302, 401;PHYS 121L, 122L, 214, 215, 216, 220*, 250, 301, 416, 458 (Medical Physics), 6 hours of physics electives above the 300 level (303 and 311 are recommended).

* MATH 221 and 307 may be taken in lieu of PHYS 220 to meet linear algebra requirement

Engineering

The Dual-Degree Engineering Program is a popular option. A student enrolled in this program completes 92 hours of coursework in three years of study at PC, including all of PC's general education requirements, as well as the necessary chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics needed to pursue further studies in engineering.

At the end of his or her junior year, the student transfers to one of the three universities with which PC has the dual-degree program agreement: Auburn University, Clemson University, and Vanderbilt University. Upon satisfactory completion of the university's engineering curriculum, the student is awarded a bachelor of science degree in physics from PC and the appropriate bachelor of engineering degree from the partnering university. Dual-degree students have had a 100% completion rate at the partner schools after finishing their work at PC.

Student visits medieval castles

"I took a class entitled The Archaeology of the Medieval Castle in Europe," says Ryan Thackray. "The class was very informative and we even took a field trip to the central and western parts of Ireland to examine some castles."
