Counseling Services

Dr. Yvette Taylor

Dr. Yvette Taylor is the director of Counseling and Wellness Services.  Dr. Taylor is a clinical psychologist who comes to us from the University of Virginia's Center for Counseling and Psychological Services after three years as a staff psychologist.  She earned her masters and doctoral degrees from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and her background and expertise are in spirituality, college adjustment, and multicultural counseling.  Her unique clinical background and training have served her well as a public speaker at national conferences and at university-sponsored forums to provide psycho-education to various campus-wide constituents. Dr. Taylor completed three summer internships at the National Institutes of Health, conducted research in Helsinki, Finland, and completed her clinical internship at the James Madison University Human Development Center/Child Development Clinic.

PC Counseling Services is housed in the new Wellness Center along with Health Services, the medical unit of our Wellness facility.  We aim to provide students with high quality, confidential health care and compassionate guidance in coping with life stressors throughout their matriculation. Our goal is to promote students total well-being through psycho-education and prevention.  It is also our mission to facilitate the restoration and maintenance of sound mental health functioning in each student via individual and group counseling, consultation, and crisis intervention.  When appropriate, referrals for psychotherapy and psychiatric services are made through Counseling Services.  Our clinical staff works cooperatively with parents, PC faculty, and relevant community constituents to address the needs of students and to develop viable solutions to concerns with which they present.

Enrolled students are eligible to receive assistance in the aforementioned capacities as needed.  Counseling services at the Wellness Center are available Monday-Friday from 8:30 AM - 5 PM (NOTE: BY APPOINTMENT ONLY) throughout the academic year.  Whenever possible, students are encouraged to schedule appointments prior to being seen.  However, walk-in services are available for emergency care.  Students who schedule appointments in advance will be seen for an intake appointment in which they receive an initial assessment of their presenting problems as well as recommendations for follow-up treatment and/or referrals.  When students' needs are more urgent and they cannot wait for an initial appointment, they are welcome to be seen on a walk-in basis throughout the daytime operating hours of the center.  Frequently, students' requests for services exceed out direct service capabilities. Therefore, when students requesting treatment also have adequate resources for private referrals, transfers are facilitated since such choices are often appropriate options for some students.
