Southern ties to the Middle Kingdom
PC’s Confucius Institute is not only an educational coup for our students who wish to understand China as a global economic power, but one that presents educational opportunities for the Upstate community and all those associated with Presbyterian College.
The Chinese Studies program is one of five programs we’re enhancing to better equip our servant leaders. The Confucius Institute, an outreach of the Chinese Studies program, serves our students as well as business leaders and South Carolina’s school children.
"The awarding of the Confucius Institute to PC is not only a blessing for our students, who wish to understand the emergence of China as a new global economic power, but also presents immense commercial, cultural, and educational opportunities for the Upstate community." -- Confucius Director David Liu.
The Confucius Institute addresses the goal of a Presbyterian College education: enabling our society’s future leaders to serve throughout the world. The Confucius Institute, the only one awarded to a liberal arts college in the United States, expands PC’s existing Chinese language and culture program that has developed over the last several years in partnership with China's Guizhou University. The Confucius Institute China has provided 3,000 volumes related to the study of the country for the PC library and will send language instructors to teach on behalf of the Institute.
PC will also partner with the State Department of Education and a coalition of four other upstate institutions -- Clemson University, Converse College, Furman University, and Wofford College -- to develop a plan for teaching Chinese language in the public schools of South Carolina.
Recognizing China's role as a business partner in the state, the Confucius Institute will also partner with the Upstate Alliance and the state's Global Trade Consortium to promote Chinese-related commerce in the Upstate, including contracted seminars or short-term educational experiences for business leaders, government officials, and civic groups interested in China.
Your gift to the Chinese Studies program, one of the five programs that are part of the Raise the Torch campaign, helps prepare PC students to lead on a global stage.
