Unimaginable Insight
Michelle Thilges '10 interned at the Charleston Renaissance Gallery during the summer before her senior year. An art and English double major and art history minor, Thilges learned about the business of art from Robert Hicklin, Jr. '71, the gallery owner and the nation’s premier dealer of art of the American South.
“I have gained an unimaginable amount of insight thanks to this internship,” Thilges said. “I feel better equipped for the coming semesters, especially in the art field, and better prepared for life after school.”
During her internship Thilges learned about the day-to-day business operations of running an art gallery and helped plan the gallery’s involvement with an event that had over 600 participants.
In addition to learning about all of the compositions in the gallery, Thilges learned about properly framing a piece of art so that it adds to its value and visual aesthetic. She also learned about properly hanging works according to prominence and composition in a way that visitors can enjoy the works while the room is allowed to breathe.
Thilges will feature original print pieces during her senior art exhibit the spring of 2010. The Hopkins, SC native plans to pursue a career in graphic design and visual communication after graduation.
