Faculty
Robert H. Freymeyer is a professor of sociology, chairman of the sociology department, and the director of undergraduate research. A double major in chemistry and sociology at Vanderbilt University, he earned his M.A. from William and Mary and Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. His special areas of instruction include Introductory Sociology, Sociology of the Contemporary South, Urban Sociology, World Population Issues, Research Methods, and Field Inquiry.
Dr. Freymeyer studies topics related to demography and southern culture and encourages his students in all of the courses he teaches to conduct their own research. He has published numerous articles in professional journals and frequently presents papers at professional meetings. An elected Councilor for the Council of Undergraduate Research, a professional organization that supports and promotes high-quality undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship, Dr. Freymeyer is also editor of The Southern Sociologist, the newsletter of the Southern Sociological Society.
He enjoys traveling with his wife Dr. Barbara Johnson, a sociology professor at the University of South Carolina Aiken, and their two children. To date he has visited six of the seven continents and frequently uses examples from these travels in his classes.

Carla Hall Alphonso is an associate professor of sociology. She received her B.A. from Oglethorpe University and her Ph.D. from Tulane University. She teaches courses in Introductory Sociology, Social Problems, Marriage and the Family, Sociology of Gender, Sociology of Aging and the Welfare State, Sociology of Work and Occupations, Children and Divorce, and the American Welfare State.
Dr. Alphonso's research interests include cross-national perceptions of the welfare state; siblings, birth order, and gender roles; and intergenerational conflict. She is currently serving as editor of The Southern Demographic News, the newsletter of the Southern Demographic Association.
Her personal interests include camping, hiking, reading, greyhounds, and baking.
Charles E. McKelvey is a Professor of Sociology and Resident Director of the Presbyterian College/University of Havana Semester in Cuba Program. He earned his B.A. from Pennsylvania State University, his M.A. from Northeastern Illinois University, and his Ph.D. from Fordham University.
Dr. McKelvey teaches courses in Anthropology, Criminology, Sociological Theory and Social Policy, Race and Ethnic Relations, Social Inequality, Social Movements, and Third World Politics and Underdevelopment.
