Honor Council

“Honor Council is one of the pillars of our campus’ uniqueness,” Zach Williams, Honor Council chairperson, said.

The Presbyterian College Honor Code distinguishes PC from other colleges and universities.  Students run and lead the Honor Council, the organization that enforces the Honor Code. Students volunteer for positions on the council every year.

And every year, the Honor Council receives more applications for positions than there are spots available.

Honor Council members serve as jury members, investigators, and defense teams.

“It’s headed up by students who feel passionate about keeping our campus an honorable one,” Williams said.

Members have many responsibilities, including keeping court cases confidential.  Although many students apply to serve as council members, the positions often require students to make decisions that significantly impact people’s lives.

Since honor is such a significant part of PC, however, maintaining it is important for Council member and non-Council member alike. The Honor Code unites the community rather than dividing it.

“The Honor Council isn't some omniscient group shrouded in mystery behind dark cloaks. It is your resident Bluefish, RSO President, intramural teammate, fraternity brother or sorority sister,” Williams said.

That students run Honor Council and involve themselves in working for the greater good of the PC community makes PC’s Honor Council a friendly, non-threatening group of students. Other students feel comfortable with their peers handling Honor Code violations.

“It is because of our Honor Council that we live and learn under the freedoms that have been given to us,” Williams said. “The freedom to leave backpacks unattended, to take tests home, and to leave our doors unlocked.”
