The Greek Honor System

The Greeks honor value so much that many Greek organizations have honor systems set up within their organizations.  Since nearly half of PC students on campus are affiliated with a Greek organization, the emphasis on honor further distinguishes PC from other colleges and universities.

“Honor is one of our five values, and therefore, we hold it in high regard,” Alpha Sigma Phi vice president, Matt Christ, says. “Personally, it’s my favorite value because without honor, you really can’t have the other four—silence, charity, purity, and patriotism.”

Juliane Laskowski, membership and recruitment director of Sigma Sigma Sigma, believes that her sorority’s honor code helps to develop its members.

"As a sister of Tri Sigma, we strive to complete our mission of 'developing strong womanly character’ and in ‘impressing upon ourselves high standards of conduct,’” she says.

“We hold all of our members to be self-respecting and hold our sorority diamond points-- loyalty, scholarship, Christian womanhood, and service-- very proudly,” Jordan Cogdill, president of Alpha Delta Pi, adds. Any violation of these points would cause a member to “face the consequences of discredible conduct that is not in violation of the honor code.”

While respecting the college’s Honor Code, Josh Martin, vice president of Pi Kappa Alpha, agrees that his fraternity’s honor system is most worthwhile.

“We hold our brothers to certain standards that do not allow for any cheating or deceitful behavior,” Martin says. “We have no control over the rest of campus, but we know our guys will not be part of any activities that would warrant an Honor Code violation.”

Since the college’s focus on honor is emphasized moreso in Greek life at PC, being a member of a certain sorority or fraternity at PC means even more than simply being a member.

“I strongly believe that the members of the Alpha Delta Pi chapter at PC hold honor to an even higher standard because of the PC honor system,” Cogdill says. “Before our members become Greek, they are taught what it means to have honor for themselves and for the school.  This helps them to realize that they should have higher honor when deciding to join a Greek community.”
