Suite Internship at the Hampton

Trish Sosnowski
Internship location: Hampton Inn and Suites
Spring 2008

I found that the world came to me as I worked the front desk at the Hampton Inn in Clinton, SC. I learned a lot from watching my managers run the hotel, teach us, and deal with guests. I learned how to be hospitable and compassionate with difficult people. . . . Having to deal with unhappy or unsatisfied guests was challenging at times, but you learn how to respond to them professionally, and try to fix their problem so they are satisfied. Follow through is extremely important because if you tell a guest that you will take care of something and it doesn't happen, everyone looks bad.

The long weekend hours were a challenging portion of the internship, but those long hours became especially helpful in developing time management skills. I will benefit from the people skills, organization, follow-through, time management and hospitability needed for this internship. The real-world bonus is that this is a great way to learn about the roles that are needed in the hospitality industry and appreciate what it takes to manage a facility well.

What is the greatest benefit? Probably that is the exposure to an industry that really interests me; working for really great managers. This experience was extremely beneficial in that I learned many transferable skills, and I was exposed to an industry that I will hopefully go into professionally.
