Sigma Nu mentors, cleans way to three awards

Sigma Nu and CHAMPS recently won three awards for the work they've done this past year with South Carolina's Adopt-a-Highway program. The partnership between the two groups earned them the County Group of the Year, the District Group of the Year, and the highest award, the State Adopt-a-Highway Group of the Year.
Jerman Disasa, CHAMPS director and Sigma Nu faculty advisor, says the partnership serves a purpose in addition to helping keep the community clean.
"The program is a vehicle, a teaching tool, for something else," Jerman Disasa, said. "The goal is for the Sigma Nu brothers to work alongside the CHAMPS kids to help motivate them."
According to Brice Taylor, president of Sigma Nu, he and his fraternity brothers relish the mentoring aspect of the program.
"It's a great opportunity to set an example for the kids since we are someone they look up to, and to show the importance of being humble and generous," Taylor said. "When the kids see a college student getting down and dirty and doing something they consider below themselves, it is a really good example of humility."
"This is a project that we love to do and hope that helping out with Adopt-a- Highway sets a great example for other people in the community," Taylor said.
Sigma Nu and CHAMPS have adopted parts of five highways in Laurens County, totaling ten miles of road. For the past five years the fraternity brothers and CHAMPS students have met up on Saturday mornings to clean the roads. The Adopt-a-Highway project is one of Sigma Nu's service projects.
In addition to participating in the Adopt-a-Highway program, Sigma Nu brothers help tutor students in Laurens twice a week.
