While in Rome, do everything:
Alison Graham listens to the Pope, shoots a video, tours the
Colisseum, has a nightmare kind of day...
Studying abroad in Rome has been one of the biggest adventures I've ever taken in my life. It has taken me completely out of my comfort zone and forced me to open my eyes to the world around me, which has been a priceless lesson. Coming from Marion, South Carolina (my hometown) to Clinton to Rome was a huge jump, but I have to say that I haven't regretted a single minute.
Since I've been here, I've seen the Trevi Fountain dozens of times, toured the Colisseum, stuck my feet into the Bay of Naples (despite that whole trash situation), seen Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii, climbed to the top of the Duomo in Florence, taken a dip in the thermal baths at Ischia, stood in St. Peter's Square and listened to the Pope speak, watched Italy's government fall and seen their election process...I could go on and on and on...and the adventures haven't just happened in Italy.
I've also been fortunate enough to go skiing in the Alps (gulp) and watch the sun set over Paris. Let me put it this way: the very first day I was here, I got separated from my roommates and stuck on a bus by myself with only a few directions from my program director to get me to the orientation building in the center of Rome...Things haven't calmed down since then, but it's been fantastic.
For one of my classes here, I had to film a short video, and my friend and I did a video on a soup kitchen/homeless shelter here in Rome called Caritas. It's posted on YouTube; here's the link: Caritas Shelter.
I have plenty of stories to tell. Here's the one about the time I was separated from my roommates-- What a nightmare!
Take care!
Alison Graham
