Former hoops star plays for the Washington Generals

Grant Herren, former standout for the Blue Hose basketball team, now gets plenty of playing time facing the Harlem Globetrotters as a member of the Washington Generals.

“It’s one of the most exciting things I can imagine doing right out of college,” Herren said. “I get to play in NBA and college arenas and see the world.”

Herren graduated from PC last year with a 3.4 GPA and a business administration degree. Wanting to play basketball professionally, he attended exposure camps last summer, playing basketball in front of scouts for basketball leagues across the US and other countries.

The Washington Generals offered him a chance to play, and so did many teams overseas. Herren decided the Generals’ offer was the most attractive because he could stay in his hometown, Orlando, and also get more chances to travel.

Herren has been on the road with the team since the Generals’ recent four-month tour began in mid-November. They’ve already made stops in several US states and a few in Canada. The team will play overseas later this spring.

“It’s a different world compared to college basketball,” Herren said about playing exhibition basketball.

PC basketball coach, Gregg Nibert, said that Herren was one of the most “competitive and hardest-working” players he ever coached. Nibert saw Herren’s competitive spirit the first time he saw him play in a three-on-three tournament in a Sea World parking lot.

“Grant was diving on the asphalt pavement for loose balls,” Nibert said. “I offered him a scholarship on sight.”

As a four-year starter at PC, Herren scored 1000 points and had 592 rebounds. Now, he says he still puts forth as much effort as he did in college, but he focuses more on the “fun aspects of basketball.”

“There’s no coach pushing us to win a championship. There’s no film (to watch),” he said. “The rivalry is not as heated as college rivalries.”

Herren added that he is proud to say that he played for Coach Nibert at PC.

“It taught me about being a man and growing up,” he said.
