PC hosts Girls State

More than 600 of the brightest high school students in South Carolina recently spent a week on the PC campus for the 67th installment of Palmetto Girls State. During the event’s fourth year on the PC campus, these outstanding student leaders learned about civic engagement and responsibility and the inner workings of government at all levels.

“PC is a great venue for Palmetto Girls State,” said Leni Patterson, Dean of Community Life at PC. “We both have a similar mission: to prepare future leaders.”

During the week, the Girls State delegates learned from various elected officials. Senator Lindsey Graham spoke during the final dinner on the PC campus. Plus, Hon. Alan Wilson, Attorney General for the State of South Carolina, and Hon. Leslie K. Riddle, SC Family Court Judge, delivered addresses during the week. Several members of the House of Representatives served on legislative panels.

In addition, Girls State delegates divided into groups of approximately 30 “cities.” They created local governments, devised political party platforms, and selected a Senate, House of Representatives, and state constitutional officers.

The South Carolina Department of the American Legion Auxiliary has organized and administered Palmetto Girls State since 1947.
