The Confucius Institute hosted its annual Chinese Lunar New Year reception at the Harper Center, February 26th, 2015. This reception is used every year as a way for those to celebrate the Chinese New Year together when everyone is so far away from China.
This year’s festivities brought guests from all across the state of South Carolina; ranging from students to teachers, to journalists, and those who just wanted to join in the festivities. We were also very lucky to have members from the House of Representatives and CI delegates from the University of South Carolina. The night began with some opening statements from Dr. Liu, Director of the Confucius Institute, following with an introductory speech from Presbyterian College’s very own President, Claude Lilly; who expressed his New Year’s wishes in Chinese. Following Dr. Lilly was a speech delivered by the Confucius Institute’s newest staff member, Ms. Pan, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute. The highlight of the night was a speech given by a Presbyterian College Senior, Graham Hope. He delivered a presentation, in Chinese, about his most recent trips to China and his future with Chinese studies. While Ms. Guo, a PCCI Language Instructor, translated the speech in English.
The night was a huge success, with guests meeting new faces, and reuniting with old ones. The reception not only allowed everyone to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year but also learn a great deal of what the Confucius Institute at Presbyterian College has accomplished so far and what it plans to continue to do in the future.
