Art Exhibit Features Comic Book Art and More

A zine, short for magazine, is an independent comic book, photography booklet, pamphlet, sticker, or other publication that uses cartoon drawings.

The art exhibit Zinesters features artwork from eleven ’zine enthusiasts who are bringing back the comic book art form. The exhibit takes place from Sept. 5 to Nov. 23 in the Elizabeth Stone Harper Gallery of the Harper Center for the Arts on the Presbyterian College campus.

“In this age of social media, zines are another way creatives reach out to openly express ‘their stories’ through the use of cartoon drawing and the printed media,” said Caroline Leigh Smith ’12, one of the artists whose work is featured in the exhibit.

The opening reception for the exhibit will take place on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Smith, along with husband and fellow cartoonist Scott Hensel, will conduct a workshop at the Harper Center Gallery on Thursday, Sept. 26 from 12 to 5 p.m.

Admission to the workshop, reception and exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12 to 5 p.m., excluding holidays.

The Elizabeth Stone Harper Gallery hosts four annual exhibitions—two exhibitions of work from nationally and internationally recognized artists, the Senior Art Major Exhibition, and the Annual Student Exhibition.
