Bill Scott ’69, The 2018 Gold P Award

Bill Scott ’69, The 2018 Gold P Award

“When PC called and told me I was to receive the Alumni Gold P Award, I really didn’t know what to say other than ‘Thank You,’’ Bill Scott ’69 said. The Gold P Award is presented to an alumnus or alumna in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in the chosen profession, which reflect honor upon the College.

“Later I looked at the list of alumni who had received the award and I became really humble really fast. Of course, the education and career foundation I received from PC was fundamental, but I could not have achieved any professional notoriety without the support of my long-time business partner, Cam Lanier III ’72, the great executives of our companies, and the customers, employees and investors who helped make our businesses successful.”

Mr. and Mrs. William H. Scott, III (Martha and Bill) reside in the West Point, Ga. – Lanett, Ala. community. They are both active in the First United Methodist Church of West Point, where Bill is a fifth-generation member. They also participate in many community activities.

Bill has been actively involved with PC since earning a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1969. He served on the PC Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2008 and has given back to his alma mater throughout the years.

PC has recognized Bill for his professional and philanthropic achievements on several occasions throughout his career. Earlier this year, he was inducted into the William Plumer Jacobs Society. He received the Young Alumnus Award in 1983 and was honored with a Doctor of Humanities degree in 2013. This year, he has been named a Distinguished Member of the William Plumer Jacobs Society.

Bill and his business associate Cam Lanier ‘72 are best known for beginning and developing a number of companies in the Georgia – Alabama area. Since 1982, they have participated in starting or providing first funding for companies involved in long distance, cellular and PCS wireless, audio and video conferencing, internet access, internet job recruiting, transaction processing and broadband communications.

Among his many community activities, Bill is a member of the Board of Directors of the East Alabama Medical Center and was a founding director and first president of the Chattahoochee Fuller Center Project Inc., a housing ministry in Chambers County, Ala.

Martha, the former Martha Jernigan of Brewton, Ala., met Bill while teaching in Auburn, Ala., public schools. Martha earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Auburn University.  She currently serves on the Board of the East Alabama Medical Center Foundation and the Chambers County Development Authority.

Bill has two sons, John Davis Scott ‘98, of Atlanta, and Richard Zachry Scott, of Auburn, Ala., as well as six grandchildren. Bill and Martha have one daughter, Mary Martha Scott DeFoor, of Pike Road, Ala.
