Blue Hose hearts are heavy following the sad news that a beloved former professor, Dr. Richard E. “Dick” Newman, passed away this month in Lincoln, Neb., at the age of 80.

A Professor Emeritus of Physical Education, Newman retired in 2013 after 16 years of dedicated service to the students, coaches, faculty, and staff of Presbyterian College. Known for his warm Midwestern manner and compassion for others, Newman invested his talent and energy into enriching PC’s liberal arts tradition through developing the mind, body, and soul of its students.

In a message shared with PC faculty and staff earlier this week, head baseball coach Elton Pollock reflected on the attributes that made Newman so special and loved.

“Dr. Dick Newman was an extraordinary man and mentor,” Pollock said. “He and I spent a lot of time together discussing baseball strategy and talking about athletics. In my eyes, he was somewhat of a superhero because of his ability to articulate his life experiences, as well as his coaching experiences. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. His impact will be felt for years to come, and he will be missed.”

A graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, where he was named Football Player of the Year his senior season, Newman earned a master’s degree from South Dakota State University and spent many years coaching football and swimming. After earning a Doctor of Education from the University of Nebraska, he joined the PC faculty in 1997 and served as chair of the Department of Physical Education and program director for the athletic coaching minor until retirement. In 2010, Newman was named PC Professor of the Year.

He is survived by his wife, Julie; his daughter, Courtney; step-children Machaela and Martin; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Newman wished not to have a funeral. Instead, a private celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
