Mrs. Dorothy Fuqua

fuquaThe PC family is saddened to hear of the passing of Dorothy Chapman Fuqua on January 23, 2015.  She was a donor and supporter of the College. An avid philanthropist, Fuqua supported the PC Department of Music, taking a personal interest in those students with a desire to serve in the church.

“Presbyterian College is extremely grateful for the many ways in which Mrs. Fuqua and her family have benefitted the PC Department of Music. She has impacted the lives of many of our students, and her legacy can be seen across the country in our alumni who are ministering in churches and performing in concert halls,” says Dr. Claude Lilly.

A member of the PC Board of Trustees from 1968-71, Fuqua established her first scholarship fund for the College in the mid-1990’s and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from PC in 2000. She was named the William Plummer Jacobs Society’s Distinguished Member in 2002, and a PC Laureate, the College’s highest honor, in 2007.

fuqua2Dr. Porter Stokes, Chair of the Department of Music, recalls that “Ms. Fuqua’s efforts forever altered the landscape of PC’s music program for the better and, in short, her contributions were transformational.” Cassidy Jarrett, a senior music student, also appreciates Fuqua’s kindness, saying, “I am so thankful for Mrs. Fuqua’s generosity and the opportunities that she has given me during my time at PC. I know I would not be playing bagpipes or have had the opportunity to take extra voice and piano lessons if it hadn’t been for the Fuqua Scholarship. Mrs. Fuqua has not only given me the gift of ‘above and beyond’ music instruction at PC, but she has also taught me about the importance of supporting the arts and young artists. I will remember her for the rest of my life.”
