IT Help Desk FAQ
My computer is infected! What do I do?
If you have your own anti-virus program installed, you can use that tool to remove the infection. Or you can file a Help Desk Request to have an IT Help Desk Technician help you.
My computer is running really slow. What can I do to speed it up?
First, you can check to see if it is infected, as many viruses and malware programs will significantly slow your computer down. If you file a Help Desk Request, we can explore this possibility as well as other potential causes of computer slowdown.
How can I protect my laptop from theft?
You can take a couple of steps to make sure your computer and/or electronic devices are safe.
- Never leave your computer unattended when in public.
- If you leave it in your room, make sure to lock your door.
- For extra security, you can purchase laptop security cables at any office supply store or online.
- Some companies include theft programs within their devices. Make sure to have your computers and/or devices registered within the programs.
- Example: Apple’s Find My Phone app
- Have all of your devices registered with Campus Police.
What if my computer and/or electronic device gets lost or stolen?
Immediately contact Campus Police (on-campus) and report the loss/theft. If you have the theft programming setup on your laptop and/or electronic devices make sure to let them know.
We also highly recommend that you insure your computer under a parent’s or your own homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy so that in the event of a loss or theft, you will be able to recover some money.
I'm having issues with BannerWeb, help?!
Please check the BannerWeb FAQ page.
Should I get a Windows computer (HP, Dell, etc) or a Mac computer?
It depends on your personal preference. Both have pros and con, for Windows, the advantage is that software compatibility is almost guaranteed, while Mac and Linux users may be required to find alternative solutions. Windows is also much more vulnerable to viruses and malware in comparison to Mac and Linux computers.
How can I back up my course work and other important files?
Cloud storage is free and available through Dropbox, Google Drive, and Microsoft OneDrive. This will give you ample amounts of space to save your papers, files, images, projects and more. You can also purchase an external hard drive at any office supply store for extra space.
Do I need to bring my own printer?
This is entirely up to you. There are stores near campus that provide ink cartridges but over time the costs can add up. We do offer on-campus printing services at our various computer labs and in the library. As a note, if you bring a wireless printer, make sure to still use the USB hookup to your computer when printing.
