Teacher Ethics Presentation

Teacher Ethics Presentation

On November 11th, 2015, the PC-PSTA Chapter and the Education Department partnered to host an event for teacher candidates on teacher ethics. Our guest speaker was Craig King, PSTA’s Director of Governmental Affairs. Mr. King shared real scenarios of teachers who had violated the SC Code of Conduct for Educators and the consequences they faced.

Jessica Davis, a senior Early Childhood Education major, appreciated the opportunity to gather additional information about the teaching profession from a legal standpoint, stating that “Mr. King’s presentation really helped me realize the importance of documentation and communication.” Taylor Madsen, a Secondary Mathematics teacher candidate, elaborated, “The examples Mr. King gave us will help me to be a better teacher. I now understand the appropriate ways to handle things. It is very important to follow all rules and to have a system in place for when something inappropriate happens. If a timestamp is needed – which it is most of the time – emails and phone records are your friends.” Taylor hopes to coach basketball and also reflected on the need to maintain boundaries with students: “I will keep my relationship with my players the same as with my students. I will not text them outside of school about things that are not related to basketball.” Based on students’ positive feedback, the Education Department plans to host an annual teacher ethics workshop.
