In Fall 2015, Emily Moore began the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at Western Carolina University College of Health and Human Sciences.

MaryBeth Schaffner works at Playworks in Chicago, an organization which, as she says, “partners with schools to use games and play to promote a positive school environment for students, teachers, and staff.”

Jada Suber (Creative Writing minor) began the Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program at the Medical University of South Carolina in June 2015. In November 2015, Jada will present her poster “Studies on the Effect of Beta Glucans on Beneficial Bacteria” at the 2015 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Seattle, WA.

After graduation, Grace Aldridge Foster worked as an admissions counselor at Presbyterian College. In Fall 2014, she became the Writing Center Coordinator for PC, and in Fall 2015 she began the English MA program at Georgetown University.

Elizabeth Bishop Arrowood worked as a Librarian Assistant at the Greer branch of the Greenville Public Library System after graduation. Currently, she works for Geppetto’s Toys in San Diego, CA.

Drew Brandel (minor) began graduate work in School Psychology at the University of Oregon in fall 2013.

In August 2015, Kyleen Carpenter received her MS in Counselor Education at the University of South Florida; she was a USF Honors LLC graduate assistant.

Townley Cheek received her master’s degree in Public Administration from East Carolina University. In June 2015, she became the Director of Public Affairs at Pamlico Community College in Grantsboro, NC.

Murray Corbett (minor) received an MBA in Entrepreneurship & Innovation from Clemson University in 2014. She worked as the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Northwestern Mutual Network Office in Greenville, SC. In September 2013, Murray gave a presentation entitled “Understanding the Journey Ahead: One Graduate’s Look at Her Career Pathway” at Presbyterian College as part of the Senior Career Workshops. Currently, she is a grant writer for the Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, NC, and a financial analyst with the Global Banking Group at Wells Fargo.

Tommy Geene (minor) received his MBA in Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Clemson University in 2014. Currently, he is a Credit Risk Analyst at Advance America.

Mary Ellis Glymph Rice, the 2013 Outstanding Senior in English, completed her MA in Rhetoric, Writing, and Linguistics at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a fully funded Graduate Teaching Assistantship in May 2015. She has accepted a position as a full-time Instructor of English at Emory & Henry College in southwest Virginia, beginning Fall 2015.

Will Gribble is an Admissions Counselor at Presbyterian College. In Fall 2015, he will begin the MAT program at North Greenville University.

After graduation, Holley Hutto (minor) began teaching 7th-grade English at Pelion Middle School in Pelion, SC.

After graduation, Sterling Ivey worked as a Policy Fellow in the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development in Atlanta, GA. He is finishing his master’s in Public Administration at Valdosta State University.

Allison Johnson works at Blanchard Machinery Company in West Columbia, SC.

For two years after graduation, Patrick Kennedy (minor) will serve in the Peace Corps in Guatemala. In 2015, he became a Youth Promoter for the Peace Corps. He and current English minor Juliana Franklin created an intercultural experience between Patrick’s students in Guatemala and the Spanish Club at PC; read an article about the experience here.

After graduation, Brittany Kirkland worked as an Account Executive at Erwin Penland Advertising in Greenville, SC. Her essay “Exceptions” was published in the Fall 2013 issue of Belle Rêve Literary Journal. In August 2014, she became the Senior Social Media Consultant at Verizon FiOS in New York City.

Lee Lancaster Alexander is a market research analyst for Priority Metrics Group in Spartanburg, SC.

In Fall 2013, Grant LeFever began an MA in Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi.

Kathleen Lifsey is the Director of Middle School Ministries at First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg, VA.

In Fall 2013, Hannah Marsh (minor) began studies at the University of South Carolina School of Law. She’s an intern at South Carolina Administrative Law Court.

Marshall McFadden worked as an office assistant at York County Regional Chamber of Commerce and is now the divisional assistant at Belk in Charlotte. In 2014, Marshall became the co-owner of Elle on East Main, a women’s clothing store in Rock Hill, SC.

Carey Mears, the 2013 Outstanding Senior in Creative Writing, does marketing for Heritage Property and Casualty Insurance in St. Petersburg, FL.

After graduation, Ana Milojkovic Lewis began a MAT at Winthrop University.

Mary Ellen Morris teaches English at Georgetown High School in Georgetown, SC.

Callie Neal teaches Honors English, Journalism, and Newspaper courses at Summerville High School in Summerville, SC.  Throughout her time at Summerville High, she has served as the English II Team Lead and as a Teacher Cadets Mentor Teacher. She is a member of the STEM team and tasked with incorporating STEM curriculum in her English classrooms with her students who are in the school’s PLTW Engineering program. In the August 2015, Callie will begin taking classes to earn her M.Ed. in Educational Administration.

Sarah Beth Anderson Palmer is the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at Presbyterian College.

Emily Ashley teaches yoga and is a benefits counselor at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.

Alanna Barnett took a position teaching English at SC Whitmore School in Fall 2012. Alanna recently received the SCPCSD SC Whitmore School 2014 Teacher of the Year Award. In May 2015, she received her Master of Arts in English jointly from the College of Charleston and the Citadel.

Allen Butt received a Fulbright grant to participate in the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program in Germany; for a year after graduation, he worked in Leipzig. Allen now lives in Austin, TX, where he works as a stand-up comedian and is an ACE team member at SpareFoot. Check out his semi-finalist performance from the Funniest Person in Austin 2015. As of August 2015, he works inside sales for Propel Marketing.

In May 2012, Philip Carter was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

After graduation, Cameron Cook, the 2012 Outstanding Senior in Creative Writing, worked as director of audience development at independent film company Paris MTN Scout in Greenville, SC. In October 2012, his short story, “Moans Like Sirens,” was selected to be filmed as part of the 2013 Expecting Goodness Short Film Festival. In 2013, he co-founded and became editor-in-chief at the website CultureMass, and then he began the MAT program at Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. He has also been making short films, including Comfort, Hester, and Anywhere. In 2014, he created Elsewhere Station, “a web series made entirely of standalone short films that feature supernatural, surreal, and dark subject matter.” The episodes include “Alms,” “Listeners,” and “Exeter” (all three of which Cameron wrote, directed, and edited), as well as “Open Door,” which Cameron co-directed and edited. In January 2015, the music video of “Fall Upon Me” he directed for Wasted Wine debuted. Cameron has accepted a position as an English teacher at Greer Middle College Charter High School in Taylors, SC, beginning Fall 2015.

Daniel Dye completed the Trinity College London TESOL program (Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) at the International House of Bristol. He is currently a Customer Service Representative with Elauwit in Columbia, SC.

John Mark Elliott received his Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in May 2015. In September 2015, he began a yearlong fellowship at Trinity Forum Academy in Royal Oak, MD.

Lacy Feigh (minor) served in the Peace Corps teaching English in Ethiopia from 2012-2014. She then received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Jordan. Lacy will begin the PhD program in History at the University of Pennsylvania in Fall 2015.

For the summer after graduation, Erin Fish will work at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico while considering options for an MA in Rhetoric and Composition.

Natalie Heath received her MA in Theatre from the University of Glasgow in 2013. She kept a blog about living in Scotland. In April 2014, she started work as the living history performer/interpreter for the Smith Family Farm at the Atlanta History Center.

Matt Orck (minor) is the Assistant to the Director of Catering at The Stratosphere in Las Vegas.

Julius Tripp Spradley will begin coursework for a Master in Divinity at Redeemer Seminary in Dallas, TX (2012). In 2015, Julius became the Youth Ministry Director at New St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church in Dallas, TX.

Zach Sprouse took a full-time position as a paralegal for the law firm of Savage, Turner, Pinckney & Madison in Savannah, GA, after graduation. Currently, he works as an associate for The Ledlie Group in Atlanta, GA, with another PC English alumnus, Philip Hauserman ’04. Zach advises clients of the corporate communications consultancy on crisis communications, crisis planning and response strategies, marketing support, brand research, and media relations.

Amanda Sutker served two years after graduation in the Peace Corps teaching English in Ethiopia; Amanda kept a blog about her experiences. Part of her Peace Corps work included a literacy program with Hollins University MFA students (including Caroline Todd Whitney ’10); you can read more about it in the HollinsNews. In 2014, she accepted a yearlong fellowship at Trinity Forum Academy in Royal Oak, MD. In March 2015, Amanda accepted a writer-editor position for the Legislative and Public Affairs Office with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.

In May 2015, Samantha Thomas (minor) received her master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Valdosta State University. In August 2015, she began working at the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice in Waycross.

Class of 2011

In May 2014, Katie Ball Kent received her M.A. in English with concentration in Creative Writing from Auburn University. While there, she worked as the student editor of Southern Humanities Review, a graduate teaching assistant, and the Alabama Region 2 Coordinator for Poetry Out Loud. She also received Auburn University’s Outstanding Master’s Student Award 2013-2014 “for recognition of Outstanding Contributions to Graduate Education and Research in English” in April 2014.

Mary Carpenter took a job after graduation as the Executive Assistant at flower magazine in Birmingham, AL; in the spring term of her junior year, Mary interned at flower. Currently, she runs her own calligraphy/styling/design business, Love, Louise Designs.

Waverly Cole was a pharmaceutical sales representative for FSC Pediatrics in Jacksonville, FL. In June 2015, she became a Weight Loss Consultant at Metabolic Research Company.

TJ Dempsey wrote for the Examiner.com as the Greenville, SC, DVD examiner after graduation. In May 2015, he received an MA in Film Studies at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Amanda Eason will begin graduate work at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (summer 2012).

Erin Emory is a freelance writer for Business Black Box in Spartanburg, SC. Prior, she worked for AmeriCorps VISTA and as the Assistant Director of Career Services at Wofford College.

After graduation, Jessica Ethridge will begin a Master of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ.

In December 2011, Akeem Favor accepted a position as a Program Coordinator for FABBS in Washington, D.C. FABBS, which is the Federation of Associations in Brain and Behavioral Sciences, is a part of the American Psychological Association. Among Akeem’s duties will be creating web pages for the organization. In May 2012, he became a member of the news staff at Edge Media Network. In Fall 2013, he began an MA in International Multimedia Journalism at Newcastle Upon Tyne University in the United Kingdom. He is also an Arts staff writer at The Courier and a staff writer at JesmondLocal. In April 2015, Akeem was named the CNPer of the month by Careers in Nonprofits, “the award-winning leader in nonprofit and association staffing, connecting the best people with the best causes.”

In September 2014, Jennifer Fuller began work as a Media Clerk at Brook Glenn Elementary in Taylors, SC.

Link Garland has worked at ettain group in Charlotte, NC, since August 2013, first as a resource specialist, then a technical recruiter, and currently as a business development manager.

Emily Grice Wilson (minor) teaches 7th grade at Starr-Iva Middle School. She won a Channel 4 Golden Apple Award in November 2013.

In August 2011, Kayla Handy will begin work as a Public Relations and Marketing Assistant at Sparks Consulting Group in Washington, D.C., where the skills she learned as a business and English double major will come into play (she’ll write press releases, clients’ blogs, and so forth).

Kaitlyn Hodges (minor) completed her M.A. in Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi in 2013. In September 2014, she accepted a full-time position at the South Carolina State Library. In summer 2015, she’ll begin work on her MLIS at the University of South Carolina.

Thomas Jonte (minor) received his MLIS from the University of South Carolina in 2013. He served as the Children’s Librarian at Volusia County Public Library in Port Orange, FL. In June 2015, he became the Youth Services Librarian at Horry County Library System.

Christine Mahoney, the 2011 Outstanding Senior in English, received her MA in English from Clemson University in August 2013. In 2014, she accepted a position as an 8th-grade English Language Arts teacher at Southwood Academy for the Performing Arts in Anderson, SC.

After graduation, Holtie Murphy served as a Teach for America corps member by teaching elementary school in Jacksonville, FL. In July 2013, she received her Florida teaching certificate for Elementary Education as well as Pre-Kindergarten/Primary Education.

Maggie Nash is the Director of Annual Giving at Presbyterian College.

Natalie Parkman Laney received her Master of Education from Lander University in 2011 and then worked as a Behavior Interventionist in Swansea, SC. Since 2013, she has been Lead Teacher at Asheville Montessori School.

In December 2013, Jamie Poag Pack (minor) earned an MA in British Literature with a writing emphasis from Belmont University in Nashville, TN. She’s also a style columnist for AND Magazine; check out her cover story, “The Eye of the Beholder” (January 2012). She coordinated the Growth and Purpose for Students Program and other academic support initiatives at Belmont University. In May 2015, Jamie joined the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.

Megan Ulmer will begin an MA in History at Clemson University in fall 2011; she’s been offered a teaching assistantship.

Austin Weathers (minor) began the Master of Teaching program at Converse College in 2011.

Deidre Webb (minor) received her law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in May 2014. Currently, she is an associate attorney at Palmetto State Law Group, LLC, in Columbia, SC.

McKenzie Wells Gribble received her MAT from North Greenville University (T. Walter Brashier Graduate School). In August 2014, she will start teaching English at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, SC.

In 2013, Shelley Whitehead received her Master of Public Health, studying International Health and Development, from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans. She worked as an Entomology Research Assistant at Tulane; her job included field collections and mosquito husbandry. In 2015 she began graduate work in medical entomology research at Penn State University, where she also works as a graduate research and teaching assistant.

Chelsea Wright Loper (minor) received MA in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi in 2013. She received the Ann Abadie Award for the best work in Documentary Media for the photography exhibit “Down Friendship: A Journey Home” in February 2012. Currently, she is the entertainment manager at Riverside EpiCenter in Austell, GA.

Class of 2010

Paige Anderson served in the Peace Corps from 2010-2012, teaching English in the Crimea region of Ukraine. She worked as an assistant producer for Voice of Russia and as an Instructional ESOL Assistant at St. Andrews Middle School in Columbia, SC. In 2014, she began an MSPH (Master of Science in Public Health) in Epidemiology at the University of South Carolina in Columbia; she has a graduate assistantship.

Thomas Ard worked as a financial aid officer at Virginia College in Greenville, SC, in 2010, and he is currently the Student Financial Services Coordinator at Clemson University.

For the next two to three years after graduation, William Baker will be working in Bratislava, Slovakia, with Trans World Radio, an international broadcast organization. As content editor for anything written in English, William will find creative ways to use the internet as well as print.

After graduation, Hunter Barnhardt interned for a year at Camp Ridgecrest for Boys in Ridgecrest, NC. He taught English at Hilton Head Prep and then coached Cross Country and Soccer and taught Creative Writing at Chatham Hall, a boarding school in Virginia. He currently works in Advancement at Chatham Hall (and still coaches Cross Country).

Minor Erin Boland Rigot began teaching English at League Middle, a charter school, in Greenville, SC (2010). In May 2014, she received from Clemson University a master’s in teaching and learning with a focus in writing.

Robert Bumgarner is a Digital Communications Specialist at Roswell Presbyterian Church. Prior, he was a senior promotional producer at WNCT-TV in Greenville, NC, and a production assistant at ABC 11 in Durham, NC.

Rachel Campbell is Admissions Director at PruittHealth in Walterboro, SC.

In May 2014, Jennifer Carter became part of the first class at Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy, graduating with her D.Pharm. After graduation from pharmacy school, she hopes to specialize in clinical pharmacy.

Julianne Crew has been accepted into the PhD program in English at Georgia State University (2010).

Alison Feleppa is an Associate Producer, Press Release Writer, and Production Assistant at WGGS TV 16 in Taylors, SC.

Lori Garvin McCall obtained her master’s degree in Human Nutrition from Winthrop University (2012)  and is currently completing a dietetic internship in Asheville, NC. In June 2013, she received her Registered Dietician (RD) License.

Jay Gilliam began teaching 11th grade American Literature at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, SC (2010). In November 2014, he became a National Board Certified Teacher.

Schay Goss Barnhardt is the Assistant Director of Admissions at Chatham Hall, a Virginia boarding school (and also her high school alma mater).

In Fall 2010, Kate Howard began teaching ninth grade English at Sumter High School. In August 2013, she became an 8th-grade English teacher at Bell Street Middle School in Clinton, SC.

Amy Jessee Forrester works at Veritas Classical Schools in Charleston, SC.

After graduation, Lauren Johnson moved to China to teach English for two years. In May 2015, she received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Karee Keefer White received a master’s in Counselor Education, specifically student affairs, from Clemson University. She became the Assistant Director of New Student Programs at the College of Charleston in January 2014.

In August 2010, Mallory Linville began teaching English part-time at Mauldin High School in SC.

Sarah Maley Farris is a member of the Charlotte Joint Terrorism Task Force.

After graduation, Micah Mallory McCall works at Resource Financial Services in Columbia, SC. In December 2014, she became a processor at AmeriSave Mortgage Corporation.

Minor Callie Murr taught English for a year at L’Académie de Limoges in France (specifically the high school Lycée Renoir). She then worked as the general manager of Moe Joe Coffee Company LLC in Clemson, SC. In June 2015, Callie started working as a Better Living Consultant at Venterra Realty Apartments, a Better Way of Living, in Atlanta, GA.

Taylor Newton Roosevelt received an MA in Literature from American University in 2013. She was accepted into the Spring 2011 “Mastering Research Methods at the Folger” seminar at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. In spring 2012, Taylor’s essay on Samuel Beckett, “Structural Tension in Endgame and the Impossibility of (a) Meaning,” won AU’s Kessler-Roberts Prize, awarded each spring to the best scholarly essay written by a graduate student in the M.A. in Literature program. In 2013, she received the award for “Outstanding Academic Achievement” for having the highest GPA in the MA program at American University.

After graduation, Anna Pardew Whisenant (minor) began work on a master’s in social work at Appalachian State University.

In 2012, Lance Poston (minor) received his MA in history and women’s & gender studies from Ohio University. He’s now working on a PhD in history, researching the intersections of race and sexuality in Cold War America. He accepted a fellowship in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program at Ohio University for 2014-2015. In April 2015, Lance was named the Outstanding Doctoral Student at Ohio University’s Leadership Awards Gala. Also in April 2015, Lance accepted the inaugural Directorship of LGBTQ Resources at the University of Kentucky at Lexington.

In Fall 2010, Bekah Sloan Gilliam began teaching eighth grade English at Chapin Middle School. In November 2014, she became a National Board Certified Teacher.

In November 2010, Erin Smith Brushwood was accepted into the master of arts in teaching program at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC.

Mary Angela Stone McMurphy worked at Wells Fargo after graduation as a credit manager, personal banker, and financial advisor. In December 2014, she began became a VP Branch Manager at Southern States Bank in Columbus, GA.

Shortly after graduation, Michelle Thilges Griggs accepted a Web Designer position in the Information Management Office at Wofford College. Her design and photography work will be part of the redesigned Wofford website, which launches in September 2010. In February 2014, she became the Director of Creative Services at Wofford.

In summer 2013, Caroline Todd Whitney received her MFA in Children’s Literature from Hollins University in Roanoke, VA. During her MFA, she wrote a children’s book for Amanda Sutker ’12’s Peace Corps literacy program with Hollins; you can read more about it in the HollinsNews. Caroline worked as a Preconstruction Assistant at Marathon Electrical Contractors, Inc., and in 2014 became the company’s full-time FSO, which, as Caroline says, “means that I pretty much make sure that we maintain all the standards and meet all the requirements needed for the company to be able to do government contracts overseas. Oddly enough, its a fantastic career for an English major/me. I’m constantly having to do research and condense information down into digestible chunks (like writing a research paper); I have to lead training classes (teaching opportunities); as well as attend classes for my training. Marking classified documents is like doing MLA stuff—not the same format at all, but knowing the rules and how/when to use them. I love it. It helps that I work with some fantastic people. They all think I’m a super hero.”

After graduation, Katie Turpen worked  in New Orleans with a program called YAV (Young Adult Volunteer) through the Presbyterian Church (USA). She received a master’s in Journalism from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and then she worked as a Development & Features Reporter at The Anniston Star. Currently, she is an assistant editor with Starnes Publishing in Birmingham, AL. Two of Katie’s stories took first place in the 2015 Alabama Press Association Better Newspaper Contest: “Winning the Battle” (Hoover Sun) for Best Feature Story Coverage, Division E; and “Chickens in the Hills” (Vestavia Voice) for Best News Feature Story Coverage, Division E. In August 2015, Katie began working for B-Metro: The Magazine of Metro Birmingham Living.

Ashton Yount works at Presbyterian College as the the PC Fund, Scotsman Club, and Stewardship Coordinator.
