Piano Clinic

The PC Music Department will host the thirty-sixth PC Piano Clinic on February 23-24, 2024. The clinic is for piano students (grades 6-12), teachers, and auditors. Featured events include masterclasses (solo and ensemble repertoire), lectures, and recitals by a guest artist and participating students and teachers.

Dr. Wendy Freeland is a Professor of Music at Jacksonville State University. She completed her graduate degrees in piano performance at the University of South Carolina under John Kenneth Adams. Her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance is from Florida Atlantic University where she studied with Heather Coltman and Judith Burganger.

She enjoys performing as soloist and collaborative artist, and is currently performing with soprano Dr. Shellie Beeman, in a program titled “Unlocking the University Experience of Folk Song: A Look at Canteloube’s Chant D’Auvergne.” In recent years she performed with mezzo-soprano Stina Öhman and fellow pianist Nancy Elton. She has performed at universities across (107) the Southeast, and at the Alabama Music Teachers State Conference, the Alabama Music Educators State Conference, the National Flute Convention, the World Piano Conference in Novi Sad, Serbia, and in Sweden, Italy and Korea.

Dr. Freeland’s recent research yielded the presentation Remembering John Kenneth Adams: Lessons in Music and Life for the 2022 American Matthay Association Festival. At her (166) university she has been the recipient of the “Faculty Research Award” several times, and was honored to receive the Cleo and Carla Thomas Outstanding Education/Service Award in 2022. She organizes the Foothills Piano Festival, directs the JSU Music Academy, and is a Past President of the Alabama Music Teachers Association. She is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, and holds memberships in Sigma Alpha Iota, Phi Kappa Lambda, The American Matthay Association, the Music Teachers National Association, and the World Piano Teachers Association.

As a soloist, Dr. Taylor has performed in recitals and with orchestras in the United States and in Europe. A frequent collaborative performer, he has toured with solo singers, choirs and instrumentalists across the United States and in such diverse places as Germany, Austria, Italy, Vatican City, Scotland, Greece, and Israel. He lectures frequently for music teacher organizations and has made presentations at state and national conferences sponsored by Music Teachers National Association, National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, and Music Educators National Conference. He enjoys adjudicating auditions, festivals and competitions, and is the author of several articles relating to piano pedagogy. His latest publication is a music review for MTNA’s Music Teacher magazine.

Dr. Taylor served for ten years on the piano and pedagogy faculty at the University of South Carolina School of Music and fifteen years on the faculty of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, South Carolina, where he chaired the music department and taught piano-related lessons and coursework. Dr. Taylor also served on the faculties of the SCGSAH Academy and Discovery programs from their respective inceptions in 1990 and 2004 until 2021. Former students have attended such institutions as The Juilliard School, Northwestern University, Indiana University, UNC School of the Arts, and numerous other schools in the region. Current and former students have been prize winners in the Aloha International Piano Competition in Honolulu and in MTNA sponsored competitions, as well as in many state concerto competitions.

Dr. Taylor holds performance and pedagogy degrees from The Juilliard School, the University of Louisville, and the University of South Carolina, where his major professors included Ania Dorfmann, Lee Luvisi, Max Camp, and Raymond Dudley.

Dr. Ann B. Wilson enjoys a career as an independent teacher of piano performance, piano pedagogy and music theory. A frequent lecturer, curriculum author, masterclass clinician, and adjudicator for piano competitions throughout the southeast, Dr. Wilson has been named a Steinway Top Teacher multiple years and was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2017 by SC Music Teachers Association.

Students of Dr. Wilson are scholarship recipients to leading institutions across the US, have been selected to prestigious summer programs, including the Southeastern Piano Festival at the University of SC, and are first place winners in numerous competitions: including the Lyceum International Piano Series Competition, SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Junior Artist Piano Competition, all divisions of the SC Piano Festival Association auditions, Walter B. Roberts Scholarship Competition, Columbia Music Teachers Association Scholarship Competition, Bob Jones University HS Festival Classical Piano Competition, Sylvia E. Looney Scholarship Competition, Music Clubs of Columbia Scholarship Competition, Elizabeth Avinger Competition, Floride Smith Dean Music Scholarship Competition, and MTNA-affiliated competitions.

Dr. Wilson holds degrees in piano and piano pedagogy from the University of South Carolina where, as an assistant to Max Camp, she taught piano and piano pedagogy and was a co-lecturer in the USC Summer Music Courses with Dr. Stephen Taylor. Her principal professors were Bong Hi Kim, Max Camp and Charles Fugo.

Dr. Wilson has served as the piano instructor for the Odyssey Summer Program of the SC Governor’s School for the Arts, and Junior Division Coordinator for SC’s MTNA Performance Competitions. A past president of SC Piano Festival Association and Columbia Music Teachers Association, Dr. Wilson is currently State Festival Chairman for SC Piano Festival Association and serves on the Board of Directors of Classical Healing Keys, a non-profit corporation that uses classical music to promote awareness, de-stigmatize, and provide support for those who struggle with mental illness.

A resident of Lexington, SC, Dr. Wilson is married to Harry Wilson, whose collegiate studies were in vocal performance. Their two daughters, Victoria Wilson Boyce and Ann Forrest Wilson Bowers, hold degrees in music from Florida State University.
