Data analytics is a concentration within the business administration major, including a total of 52 credit hours. As a liberal arts student, you will learn problem solving and critical thinking skills necessary for the field of data analytics. During your first two years, you will fulfill your general education courses in humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Also, during your first two years, you’ll ease into the major by taking Principles of Financial Accounting, Principles of Macroeconomics, and Principles of Microeconomics, along with Introduction to Data Analytics and Applied Analytics. In these first data analytics classes you will learn the programming language Python.
In your junior and senior years, you’ll dig deeper into your interests, including Data Visualization where you will work with Tableau and Power BI. You will also complete the Data Analytics Capstone class where you will work on a research project the topic of which you may choose based on your own interests and career goals. You will also take an additional elective in business, math or computer science, providing you with a set of skills applicable to any market where analytics is used. Many students add another business concentration like accounting, management, marketing or economics to supplement their data analytics concentration.
Students majoring in another area at PC may want to add a Data Analytics minor. A minor in data analytics will make you an asset in any field you enter. Today, data is everywhere and whether you’re a biologist working in a laboratory or a political scientist analyzing poll data, the skills from this minor could serve you well. By minoring in analytics, you will be able to support your resume with skills such as statistical analysis, programming languages, and data management and manipulation. The goal of any liberal arts student is to finish their degree as well rounded as possible, and a minor in analytics will not only make you more well-rounded, but also more employable in any industry.
Business analytics is a rapidly expanding field because of the growth of big data. Businesses have access to more data than ever before, and the data requires effective analysis for optimal decision-making. With a data analytics concentration, your employment outlook is strong.
Job titles you may attain with a data analytics degree include IT systems analyst, operations analyst, data scientist and quantitative analyst. Skills you learn from data analytics can also be used in fields that you might not think of when you think of data analytics. You likely will have skills to work as an actuary, an economist or a forensic accountant. Additionally, every industry has data that could be leveraged to support strategy and decision making. Whether you are interested in healthcare, sports, finance, or something else entirely, there is an opportunity for you to apply your skills as an analyst.
You can build on your ability to communicate well and lead others with involvement in clubs and on-campus activities, which leads to better employment opportunities.
While at PC, you can develop a solid background in information technology, software, and tools related to data mining, statistical analysis and business process optimization.
