WHAT YOU’LL STUDY
The Southern studies minor is an interdisciplinary minor that can include courses in English, history, music, religion and other disciplines. You must successfully complete 18 hours of select courses to earn a minor in Southern studies.
Introduction to Southern Studies is the only course required for the minor. With this solid foundation in place, you can customize the minor the way you’d like by selecting five courses, or 18 hours, from a list that includes:

- Southern Jewish Literature
- Southern Women’s Writing
- Young America, 1800–1865
- History of the South
- African-American History
- Survey of American Popular Music
- African-Americans and the Political System

- Sociology of the Contemporary South
You can also talk with your minor advisor about earning course credit by conducting an internship, researching a special topic, or taking a course that covers subject matter that is not part of the regular curriculum.
