WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

If you enjoy chemistry, you can minor in chemistry by successfully completing 19 to 21 hours of select chemistry and biochemistry courses.

Four courses and labs, for a total of 16 hours, are required for the minor:

  • General Chemistry I
  • General Chemistry II
  • Organic Chemistry I
  • Organic Chemistry II

With this foundation in chemistry, you can satisfy the remaining three hours required for the minor by successfully completing at least one of these courses:

Select a minimum of 3 hours from the following:

  • Biochemistry I
  • Quantitative Analysis
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Advanced Organic Chemistry
  • Spectroscopy
  • Forensic Science
  • Chemistry and Art
  • Physical Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry II

With your advisor’s approval, you may also choose to earn three or four hours completing a Special Topics course in chemistry or biochemistry.

You must also complete the American Chemical Society General Chemistry Exam with a grade of 60% or higher to receive credit for Chemistry 102.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in chemistry, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of Chemistry may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the chemistry minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the chemistry department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the chemistry minor.
