WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

You can earn a minor in Chinese studies by successfully completing 18 hours of approved courses. You can select courses in Chinese, history and political science to fulfill your minor.

The only required course needed for the Chinese studies minor is Intermediate Chinese. If you satisfy this requirement, you can customize the minor the way you’d like by selecting the remaining 15 hours from a number of courses.

You must choose at least one course from the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of History and the Department of Political Science. The Chinese courses you can select from include:

  • Intermediate Chinese II
  • Chinese Comp and Conversation I
  • Chinese Comp and Conversation II
  • Business Chinese I
  • Advanced Chinese I
  • Advanced Chinese II

You’ll learn about the history of China by selecting at least one of these courses:

  • History & Philosophy of Traditional China
  • Modern China and East Asia
  • Family & Gender in Chinese History

The political science course, Politics of Modern China and Asia, rounds out your minor in Chinese studies.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in Chinese studies, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of Modern Foreign Languages may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the Chinese studies minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the Department of Modern Foreign Languages about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the Chinese studies minor.
