WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

If you love to write, you can minor in creative writing by successfully completing 18 hours of select courses.

Three courses are required for the creative writing minor:

  • Introduction to Literature
  • Advanced Creative Writing Workshop
  • Creative Writing: Senior Portfolio

You can customize the minor by focusing on the type of writing you most want to write. You’ll do this by selecting one Creative Writing workshop, worth three hours of credit. The options include:

  • Creative Writing: Poetry
  • Creative Writing: Fiction
  • Creative Writing: Creative Nonfiction 3

Or you can select a three-hour Topics in Creating Writing course.

To complete your creative writing minor, you must select two additional courses from the following list:

  • Writing for Mass Media
  • Creative Writing: Poetry
  • Creative Writing: Fiction
  • Creative Writing: Creative Nonfiction
  • Topics in Creative Writing
  • Special Topics
  • Directed Studies
  • Studies in Linguistics
  • Advanced Writing
  • Introduction to Media Studies
  • Documentary Theatre
  • Theatre for Social Change

You may be able to select other appropriate courses as approved by the creative writing director. You may also conduct an approved internship for one to four hours of course credit.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in creative writing, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of English may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the creative writing minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the English department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the creative writing minor.
