WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

The Environmental Studies minor is an interdisciplinary minor that includes courses in biology, economics, philosophy and sociology. All in all, you’ll need to earn 20 to 23 hours to earn a minor in environmental studies.

You’ll earn 12 hours by successfully completing three courses required for the minor:

  • Biological Concepts and Lab
  • Organismal Biology and Lab
  • Environmental Science

You can earn four hours by successfully completing any one of the following courses:

  • Invertebrate Zoology
  • Introductory Botany
  • Plant Systematics
  • Biogeography
  • Developmental Biology
  • Ecology
  • Biogeography
  • Developmental Biology
  • Ecology

You can earn another three hours by taking a directed study, a special topics course, or one of the following:

  • Environmental Economics
  • Wilderness
  • Environmental Ethics
  • World Population Issues

You can round out your environmental studies minor by earning one to four hours from:

  • Internship
  • Readings

  • Special Projects

You may be able to earn credit hours by taking other appropriate courses as approved by the environmental studies advisor.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in environmental studies, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of Biology may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the environmental studies minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the biology department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the environmental studies minor.
