What you’ll study as a History major

As a history major, you gain wider perspectives on the ideas, events, and problems that affect human civilizations. You also come away with real-world skills, like problem-solving, communicating, and reasoning.   To ensure a broad-based liberal arts experience, history majors minor in another field of study. You may even choose to pursue a double major, which enables you to gain mastery in more than one discipline.

The history major requires  30 hours of coursework. The curriculum covers topics as diverse as medieval warfare and the 1960s. During the first two years, you’ll take courses like American History I and II, and electives like African-American History. Classes become more specialized during your junior and senior years. You’ll complete a European course, like Medieval England and France, and one Area Studies course,  like Modern Latin America. Each major completes a capstone project in which they demonstrate skills in historical research, writing, and presentation, you may also conduct an honors project, which earns you marks of distinction on your transcript and diploma.

Careers in History

If you love history but wonder if there are enough jobs for history majors, there’s no need to worry. The skills you acquire in completing your history degree translate well into multiple fields. Alumni from the History Department at PC have pursued careers in law, the National Park Service, and the Foreign Service. They have become Fulbright Scholars and ministers. They have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and the Peace Corps.  They have launched their businesses.  The options and possibilities are numerous.

We cannot provide salary information for all possible career paths, but according to data gathered by O*Net, the average median salary for a historian in the U.S. was $64,500.  .
