WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

The international studies minor is an interdisciplinary minor that can include courses in business, music and other disciplines. You must successfully complete 18 hours of select courses to earn a minor in international studies.

You’re required to take one modern foreign language course as part of the minor. You can choose a course in Chinese, French, Portuguese or Spanish.

A minimum of two courses, or six hours, must be from one thematic specialization area. These areas include:

  • History, Culture and Society
  • International Business
  • International Politics and Diplomacy

At least two courses, or six hours, must also come from one regional specialization area. These areas include:

  • Africa
  • Asia and the Pacific
  • Europe and Russia
  • Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Middle East

To round out the international studies minor, you must take one study abroad experience course, which is also worth three hours of credit.

Your advisor can tell you more, but keep these items in mind regarding the minor:

  • No more than six hours of coursework can overlap with another single major or minor.
  • You cannot receive both general education and international studies minor credit for the same course.
  • Study abroad courses on an approved semester or year-long program through PC may be applied to thematic specialization, regional specialization or the study abroad experience.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in international studies, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of History may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the international studies minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the history department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the international studies minor.
