WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

The Latin American Studies minor is an interdisciplinary minor that includes courses in Spanish, political science, sociology and art history. You’ll need to earn 18 hours in select courses to earn a minor in Latin American Studies.

You’ll build a foundation for the minor by taking Introduction to Latin American Studies. It’s the only required course for the minor.

You can customize the minor the way you’d like by selecting 15 hours from the following courses:

  • Topics in Latin American Art
  • Political Violence and Culture in Latin America
  • Latin American Cinema
  • Modern Latin American Politics
  • 3rd World Underdeveloped Nations and Politics
  • Latin American Civilization
  • Early Modern Spanish-American Literature
  • Contemporary Spanish-American Literature 3

You can also earn one to six hours by studying abroad.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in Latin American Studies, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of Modern Foreign Languages may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the Latin American Studies minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the modern foreign languages department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the Latin American Studies minor.
