WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

All PC students are required to take general education courses as the basis of their liberal arts education. As a music major, you will focus your four years on furthering your talent and career options.

During your freshman and sophomore years, you take 30 to 32 hours of study per year, leading to performances with PC ensembles and recitals. Classwork includes functional keyboard skills, music theory, and both ear-training and sight-singing.

During your junior and senior years, you will take 20 to 22 hours per year of similar study with more PC ensembles and recitals. A special fall or spring recital highlight your junior year.

PC music majors also provide piano accompaniment for area solo ensembles, area churches and high school performances. And throughout the PC school year, you can perform in many annual and seasonal events and recitals.

As a music major, you’ll also complete a capstone research project during your senior year. The capstone includes both a recital and research. In addition to crowning your educational accomplishments, the capstone demonstrates that you know how to learn using critical thinking skills.

Careers in Music

Finding positions in the music industry requires a combination of talent, training, connections and perseverance. But PC music graduates can, and have, taken many different career paths related to music.

Some have gone on to graduate school, while others have pursued music education and research. In addition, many orchestral, vocal and instrumental performers, church musicians, and college arts administrators majored in music at PC.

Recent PC music graduates are pursuing careers in music education, sacred music, choral conducting, music composition, music therapy and psychology.

But as an undergraduate, gain as much experience as possible, paid or unpaid, through college and local organizations. Audition with local musical groups, choirs or orchestras. And seek internships or volunteer positions with relevant organizations.
