WHAT YOU’LL STUDY

You can earn a minor in music by successfully completing 18 hours of specified music courses.

The following courses, along with the credit hours you’ll earn for successfully completing each course, include:

  • Recital Attendance (4 satisfactory terms), 0
  • Music Appreciation, 3
  • Theory I, 2
  • Musician Skills I, 2
  • Theory II, 2
  • Musicianship Skills II, 2
  • Applied Music (half hour per semester of instrument or voice for four satisfactory terms), 2

You can customize your music minor by selecting one of the following ensembles for four satisfactory terms:

  • The Presbyterian College Choir
  • Presbyterian College Wind Ensemble Choir
  • Presbyterian College Chamber Orchestra

You must also select one hour of electives in consultation with your minor adviser.

Your music minor adviser can tell you more, but here are a few items to keep in mind:

  • You must register for MUSC 1000 every term and earn a minimum of four satisfactory grades.
  • Private lessons require the payment of an additional fee.
  • There is not a recital requirement, but minors, with the consent of private applied instructor, are encouraged to perform and supported by the department when they elect to perform a recital. Minors would register for MUSC 3700 in either the junior or senior year.

You’ll need to make at least a “C” in each course to earn a minor in music, although you might be allowed to make one “D.” The Department of Music may specify certain courses that you’ll need to make at least a “C” in, and you’ll need to make an overall average of “C” or better on all work presented for the minor.

You must take at least half of the hours required for the minor at PC. The Provost must approve any substitutions to the requirements of the music minor prior to completion of the amended requirement.

Speak with your advisor or the chair of the music department about minimum grades allowed and any additional requirements for the music minor.
