Dr. Trey Boyd ’09 – Outstanding Young Alumnus Award

This year’s Outstanding Young Alumnus, Dr. Trey Boyd ’09, is a passionate – and vocal – supporter of his alma mater.

Just ask Duke University.

Many remember the Blue Hose’ first game of the year against the Blue Devils in 2008 when the national powerhouse’s Cameron Crazies yelled so loudly at him for cheering during a Duke free throw, it was heard around the world on ESPN.

Trey was equally engaged on campus, as well, — playing intramural sports, serving on Campus Outreach, and being an active member of Theta Chi. As an upperclassman, he served as an orientation HOSE Leader and new student orientation co-chair. He also served on PC’s Honor Council.

After PC, Trey earned his physician assistant degree from Trevecca University in Nashville, Tenn., then located to Spartanburg to practice in orthopedic surgery. In 2016, Trey was asked to join the newly-formed PA Advisory Committee at PC during its launch of a new PA program. Soon after, Trey accepted a faculty position with the PCPA program as director of clinical education and was a founding member of the PA faculty.

During his time with the program, Trey joined the Good Shepherd Free Clinic as a weekly provider for patients in the community. He also volunteered for health fairs and worked with the School of Pharmacy to promote healthy lifestyles for the patients of the clinic. As the PA program was getting started, Trey completed his doctoral degree from the University of Lynchburg in education and leadership. Later, Trey also helped to revitalize the PC Young Alumni Council, serving as the inaugural president of the council from 2019-2021.

Trey later joined the faculty at the University of Lynchburg in Virginia as the director of postgraduate medicine and associate program director in the College of Medical Science, working with PA students and professional PAs from all over the country in the Doctor of Medical Science program.

During his time in Lynchburg, Trey also volunteered with the Free Clinics of Central Virginia as a primary care provider and attending for PA and other medical students. Trey and his colleague, Dr. Dan Johnson, expanded the free clinic system in the area by helping to found the new Bedford Free Clinic in Bedford, Va.

Trey has served in many leadership roles as a PA and PA educator, including in the South Carolina and Virginia Academies of PAs, as a volunteer presenter at state conferences, and a lecturer for PA and medical education programs. Trey has published several articles, and is also a peer reviewer for two medical journals.

Trey married Julie Guess Boyd ’09 in 2013, and they have two boys, Van (3) and Ben (8 months). Trey loves playing with his sons and spending time with his family in the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. All of the family’s cars proudly display their PC stickers wherever they wander.
