Bill ’62 & Fran Matthews

Presbyterian College alumnus and former College trustee Bill Matthews took to heart his alma mater’s motto, Dum Vivimus Servimus, with a lifetime of leadership and service.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., Matthews is the retired president and board member of the Belk Matthews Stores and a 1962 graduate of PC. He served two terms on the College’s board of trustees and also served as a trustee of Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., where he currently serves as chairman of the board for SunTrust Bank.

Throughout his career in both Georgia and North Carolina, Matthews has been an energetic business and civic leader, oftentimes presiding over and chairing a wide variety of boards. He was the founding chair of the Community Foundation, chair of the Macon Chamber of Commerce, president of the Macon Rotary Club, chair of the Hay House Museum, president of Idle Hour Country Club, chair of the Macon Downtown Council, and president of Highlands Country Club in Highlands, N.C.

He is a lifetime board member of the Museum of Arts and Sciences, a founding board member of the First Presbyterian Day School, and a member of the board of directors for the Macon Heritage Foundation, Macon Good Industries, the MedCen Foundation, the Medical Center of Central Georgia, the American Cancer Society, Mercer Medical School, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, the Georgia Retail Association, and the Bascom Art Center in Highlands.

Currently residing in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., he and his wife, Fran, have three children. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church of Macon, Ga.
