“Giving to pc is easy for my wife, Susan, ’21(h) and me,” said Dr. Holbrook Raynal ’70. “We love PC. Susan quickly learned the value of what PC has to offer students, the staff, and the community surrounding the College.

“For us, it is indeed mostly about giving back to PC because PC has given so much to me and my family. Early on, I also witnessed my parents set the example of giving to their alma maters—Mom to PC, and Dad to Davidson.”

The Raynals recently established the Holbrook ’70 and Susan ’21(h)  Raynal Endowed Scholarship. Because of their faithful and generous giving, they will be inducted into the College’s William Plumer Jacobs Society at the 2021 WPJ Gala and Tartan Gathering on October 29.

“Being inducted into the WPJ Society is a great honor for Susan and me,” Dr. Raynal said. “We humbly accept the recognition, however our greatest hope related to this honor is that it will encourage and persuade many others to achieve and exceed this level of giving to this college that has changed so many lives and offers a pathway to responsible and successful living in this nation and in this world.”

The history of PC has been intertwined with Dr. Raynal’s family history for more than 100 years. Born in Greenville, SC, Dr. Raynal is the son of Charles and Tish Raynal. Dr. Raynal’s father is the former pastor of Fountain Inn Presbyterian Church in Fountain Inn, SC

Dr. Raynal’s mother, his son Andrews, and several other relatives graduated from PC. One of Dr. Raynal’s grandfathers, Dr. Frank Dudley Jones, was a professor of religion, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and South Carolina history at PC from 1919 until he retired in 1944.

Dr. Raynal was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and made the Dean’s List. He also participated in advanced ROTC and was awarded a commission in the U.S. Army when he graduated.

Following his graduation, he served as a recruitment assistant in the PC Admissions Office while awaiting his military orders. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and Ft. Benning, GA.

Dr. Raynal attended graduate school at Clemson University for two years after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. In 1973, he entered the medical school at the Medical University of SC. He graduated from MUSC with a doctor of medicine degree in 1977 and in 1980, moved to Clinton to practice medicine and provided medical services in the local community for 25 years. He served on many committees and boards throughout the community.

Dr. Raynal has been a member of First Presbyterian Church, Clinton, SC since 1980. He has served as chairman of the Board of Deacons. He is an ordained Elder and has served several terms as Ruling Elder. He has also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina.

The Raynals have two children: daughter, Brook Griffin, and son, Andrew ’03. The Raynals also have a son-in-law, Jay Griffin, and three grandchildren, Wells, Hunter, and James Griffin.
