NOTE: The College’s licensing agreement provides this software only to current students. Once you are no longer a current PC student, you will lose access to any software that you have downloaded. Available software currently includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Microsoft determines which versions of the software are available for download; available software may vary based on your operating system.

Operating System

Most companies offer educational discounts on laptops, desktop computers, tablets, and programs. You can purchase online or go into any retail store and ask about their educational discounts, promotions or deals.

It is highly recommended that you keep your Operating System up to date by setting it for Automatic updates.

Note: There is a variety of hardware available, including netbooks, tablet computers, that students may find to be sufficient for their needs.  As such, the concern from an IT perspective is that the software receives regular security updates to reduce the risk of infections.

Wi-fi COnnection

Presbyterian College has a 1,000Mbps fiber internet connection. There is also wireless WiFi coverage on and around campus. To connect, select the ‘PC_Student’ and enter your student supplied passkey. Everyone is required to authenticate to the wireless network for access. You will be prompted for your username and password, which is the same password used for printing at the library and computer labs.

An ethernet cable is recommended in the dorm rooms. Ethernet cables provide a higher speed and more reliable network connection than wireless. Cables may be purchased at local stores: Fred’s and WalMart.

NOTE: Personal wireless Access Points (A.P.s) and routers are strictly prohibited throughout the campus.

Never share your username or password with someone who requests it via email. Only give your password to an IT Help Desk Technician, and only if you have submitted your computer for repair.

Students using Microsoft Windows must run a real-time anti-virus program in order to connect to the College’s network. Students may use other anti-virus solutions, provided that subscriptions are up to date. Students should run only one real-time anti-virus program; running more than one can create problems.

Recommended anti-virus software:

Mac- and Linux-based systems are not required to run an anti-virus program. Mac users, however, should know that viruses and malware can infect their computers.

Do not install any anti-virus program that appears via pop up while you are browsing the Internet. People have infected their computers by opening a fraudulent offer of a free anti-virus program. Scams usually prompt the user via a “pop-up window” which appears while browsing the Internet, informing the user of a purported infection, and offering to install software to repair it.

If you have any questions about the legitimacy of a particular anti-virus program, please contact us.

Beware of opening links or attachments in emails that ask you to log into a system to repair a problem, correct a bank error, or respond to a government warning. Go to the site by searching for the company or typing a known URL rather than clicking on a link in an email.

If you are receiving these types of emails; there is a possibility someone else on campus is too. We want to be proactive in these situations to avoid security issues. Make sure to report the email as spam/phishing through your Gmail and contact us immediately at helpdesk@presby.edu or visit PC’s Technology Help Desk, downstairs in Thomason Library, Room 11
