U.S. Politics / Pre-Law Studies (Tenure-Track)

Position Description

The Department of Political Science at Presbyterian College invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track, assistant professor position in U.S. politics. (The Ph.D. in political science is strongly preferred, but ABD will be considered at the rank of instructor.) The successful candidate will also serve as Director of Pre-law Studies, with a start date of August 16, 2027. Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.

The Department of Political Science is one of the largest on campus, as it typically graduates around 15-20 students each year. External observers highlight small class sizes, a well-developed curriculum, and a faculty committed to student learning and success. In that context, successful applicants should display a strong enthusiasm for teaching and a commitment to both service and scholarship.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position include teaching in the Pre-Law minor, including two courses in constitutional law (governmental powers, and civil rights/liberties) as well as a course in legal studies. The ideal candidate will also teach an introductory course in U.S. government as well as upper-level courses in U.S. politics or public policy, with an open field of specialization. The teaching load is seven courses per academic year (4:3).

In addition to teaching, responsibilities as Director of Pre-Law Studies include coordination of the College’s established pre-law program, advising Pre-Law minors and other students interested in law, and networking with law schools and other graduate programs, including opportunities in political science, public administration, or state and local politics. The ideal candidate will also contribute to student-focused activities, including the Pre-Law and Political Science clubs, South Carolina Student Legislature, and various on-campus events.
