Assistant Professor of Art (Studio Art)

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Presbyterian College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art, with an emphasis in studio art, beginning Fall 2027. The ideal candidate will be a dedicated teacher who enjoys working closely with undergraduate students and contributing to the department and College community.

We seek a versatile artist and teacher who can contribute broadly to our undergraduate Art program. Applicants from a wide range of studio disciplines are encouraged to apply, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media, installation, interdisciplinary practice, and other traditional or contemporary areas.

Teaching may include foundational courses such as Drawing, 2D Design, and 3D Design, as well as beginning through advanced courses related to the candidate’s area of expertise. Other responsibilities may include developing Fine Art electives, teaching Junior and Senior Seminar, advising Art majors and minors, and mentoring seniors as they prepare their Senior Exhibition.

Because we are a small program, our faculty work closely with students at every level, from non-majors taking their first studio course to seniors developing independent bodies of work. We are looking for someone who values that kind of interaction and is interested in helping shape the continued growth of the Art program. The successful candidate will also maintain an active professional creative practice, contribute to departmental and College service, and be committed to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students.

Required qualifications for the position include an MFA or other appropriate terminal degree in Studio Art, Fine Art, or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment. Candidates should have expertise in at least one area of studio art, along with the versatility to teach across more than one area and at different levels of the undergraduate curriculum.

Preferred qualifications include college-level teaching experience, preferably as instructor of record, and the ability to teach in more than one area of studio art. Candidates should have experience working across traditional and contemporary approaches to artmaking and mentoring advanced undergraduate students in independent studio work, professional practices, and exhibition preparation. Experience managing studio facilities and equipment is also preferred, along with an active exhibition record and continued professional development as a practicing artist.

Interested individuals should electronically send the following materials to Provost Dr. Erin McAdams at [email protected]:

  • a cover letter that describes your motivation for applying for this position
  • curriculum vitae
  • statement of teaching philosophy
  • artist statement
  • three letters of recommendation
  • official (or unofficial) college and graduate transcripts
  • link to professional website (if available)
  • portfolio of 10-15 images (including titles, media, and dates)
  • 10-15 images of student work

For specific questions regarding the position, please contact Miriam Ragland, chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department, at [email protected].

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.
